Natural health movement achieving key victories over HFCS, MSG, GMOs and more

(NaturalNews) It’s hard to see it sometimes, but the natural health community has achieved many important victories over the last few years in exposing the truth about dangerous chemicals and food ingredients. Here are some of the major victories we’ve collectively achieved: High-Fructose Corn Syrup exposed We’ve been victorious in spreading the word about the dangers of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which I call “liquid sugar crack.” The public has learned so much about the dangers of this refined ingredient that food manufacturers are now switching away from HFCS and using more natural refined ingredients (such as evaporated cane juice, which is far better for you than HFCS). You can even buy Hunt’s Ketchup now, which declares right on the front label, “NO High Fructose Corn Syrup!” Not surprisingly, the Corn Refiners Association has spent millions of dollars trying to obfuscate this issue by claiming HFCS is perfectly good for you. They’ve attacked virtually every news organization that writes…

Superfood meal powder review: Garden of Life Raw Meal and Boku Superfood

(NaturalNews) It’s time to review two of the industry’s most popular superfood products: Raw Meal from Garden of Life (www.GardenofLife.com) and Boku Superfood from the Boku Superfood company (www.BokuSuperfood.com). I’ll also mention some other notable and important superfood products at the conclusion of this article. Boku Superfood was launched in early 2008 and has since grown to be a highly respected and quite popular superfood product. It is not available in retail stores, however: The high cost of its authentic ingredients (see below) leaves no room for typical retail margins, so Boku Superfood is only available online. The Boku formulation emphasizes premium superfood ingredients and includes a potent blend of nutrient-rich mushrooms, microalgae, greens, fruits and enzymes. Nearly everything in Boku Superfood is certified organic. The formula contains no sugars, no soy, no grains, no dairy, no chemical sweeteners, etc. It’s gluten free, Kosher and USDA certified organic (that’s the standard that actually means it’s really organic). Because of its formulation, Boku Superfood lends itself extremely well to chocolate …

Whole Foods Market to require organic certification on all health and beauty products

(NaturalNews) Natural foods retailer Whole Foods Market will soon require that all health and beauty products it carries that claim to be organic, be certified by either the Agriculture Department’s National Organic Program, or NSF International, an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based nonprofit certifier. In leiu of the lack of federal oversight of “organic” personal care products, Whole Foods is taking a voluntary next step to improve the quality of products in this category. It is becoming widely known that personal care products that say they are organic are not necessarily so. Products can say they contain “organic ingredients” or even contain the word “organic” in their name brand, but these terms can be deceptive. Many of these products still contain many of the same artificial and petroleum-derived ingredients that most conventional personal care products do. And companies get away with this because the laws concerning organics in personal care products are lax. A clear and concise definition of what is “natural” and “organic” has yet…

Raw, sprouted nuts from LivingNutz taste like heaven while supporting good nutrition

(NaturalNews) The more you study nutrition, the more you learn about the health benefits of raw nuts. Nuts offer nutritious oils and vitamins (like Vitamin E) that continue to surprise scientists with their ability to support and enhance good health. But the problem with most conventional nuts is that they’re either cooked or too boring to eat. Nobody wants to eat boring food, and cooked nuts lose much of their original nutritional value. The LivingNutz company solves both problems at once! They offer a remarkable line of raw, sprouted nuts with amazing flavors using truly natural ingredients. I’ve been a huge fan of the LivingNutz product line for many years, and Seth Leaf, the founder of LivingNutz, has been a steadfast champion of food freedom and an advocate of natural health. He spoke out quite publicly against the fumigation of California almonds, for example, and has been a big supporter of the raw …

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) recall leaves food consumers wondering: What is this stuff?

(NaturalNews) Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) is one of most common soy-based food “fillers” used to make literally thousands of processed food products. It’s found in veggie burgers, gravy mixes, soups and many other grocery products. Last Thursday, one of the largest producers of HVP in the United States, Las Vegas-based Basic Food Flavors Inc., was the subject of an FDA consumer safety warning announcement. Salmonella had been found contaminating the company’s HVP production equipment, the FDA said, and a nationwide recall was initiated. Most Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein isn’t purchased directly by consumers; it’s used by food production companies as an ingredient in mainstream processed foods. So it shows up in thousands of grocery products — and most consumers are not aware they’re eating this ingredient . In fact, many consumers are, for the first time, asking, “What is HVP?” Beware of what’s in your groceries I wrote about HVP in my 2004 book, “Grocery Warning,” which warned consumers about a dozen potentially hazardous food ingredients…

Nearly 17,000 chemicals remain corporate secrets – even the EPA doesn’t know what they are

(NaturalNews) The 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) requires that manufacturers of products containing potentially toxic chemicals disclose their ingredients to the federal government, however a loophole in the requirement allows manufacturers to arbitrarily withhold information that they deem sensitive to their business. As a result, over 17,000 product chemicals remain secret not only from the public but from government officials. Each year, over 700 new chemicals are introduced by manufacturers, many of which do not get disclosed either to the public or to government agencies. About 95 percent of new chemical notices submitted to the government request some kind of secrecy. Critics allege that manufacturers are exploiting the original intent of TSCA, abusing it to hide sensitive information about ingredients that are likely toxic and may otherwise get banned. For the first time in many years, Congress is addressing the issue of disclosure abuse with promises of reforming the regulatory provisions. Consumer and environmental groups, in conjunction with many government officials, …
