Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) recall leaves food consumers wondering: What is this stuff?

(NaturalNews) Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) is one of most common soy-based food “fillers” used to make literally thousands of processed food products. It’s found in veggie burgers, gravy mixes, soups and many other grocery products. Last Thursday, one of the largest producers of HVP in the United States, Las Vegas-based Basic Food Flavors Inc., was the subject of an FDA consumer safety warning announcement. Salmonella had been found contaminating the company’s HVP production equipment, the FDA said, and a nationwide recall was initiated. Most Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein isn’t purchased directly by consumers; it’s used by food production companies as an ingredient in mainstream processed foods. So it shows up in thousands of grocery products — and most consumers are not aware they’re eating this ingredient . In fact, many consumers are, for the first time, asking, “What is HVP?” Beware of what’s in your groceries I wrote about HVP in my 2004 book, “Grocery Warning,” which warned consumers about a dozen potentially hazardous food ingredients…

Nearly 17,000 chemicals remain corporate secrets – even the EPA doesn’t know what they are

(NaturalNews) The 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) requires that manufacturers of products containing potentially toxic chemicals disclose their ingredients to the federal government, however a loophole in the requirement allows manufacturers to arbitrarily withhold information that they deem sensitive to their business. As a result, over 17,000 product chemicals remain secret not only from the public but from government officials. Each year, over 700 new chemicals are introduced by manufacturers, many of which do not get disclosed either to the public or to government agencies. About 95 percent of new chemical notices submitted to the government request some kind of secrecy. Critics allege that manufacturers are exploiting the original intent of TSCA, abusing it to hide sensitive information about ingredients that are likely toxic and may otherwise get banned. For the first time in many years, Congress is addressing the issue of disclosure abuse with promises of reforming the regulatory provisions. Consumer and environmental groups, in conjunction with many government officials, …

Broths Contain Mysterious Ingredients

(NaturalNews) There’s a company that dominates the soup business, but its products are at best bland and mushy. You probably know who I’m talking about. Some of the company’s soups contain so much salt that they’re the human equivalent of a salt lick. For example, its chicken noodle soup dishes up a whopping 890 mg of sodium per serving, and 2,225 grams of sodium per can. This company also owns the leading maker of various chicken broths and stocks. Until recently, that subsidiary spiked its tasteless products with monosodium glutamate (MSG), a flavor enhancer. But MSG is well documented as a cause of Chinese Restaurant Syndrome. I’m not joking. Every Chinese restaurant used to boost the flavor of its meals by adding MSG. But a fair number of customers complained of neck and muscle aches afterwards, the result of MSG. So now, a lot of Chinese restaurants don’t use MSG anymore. But I digress. The company recently introduced organic chicken, beef, and vegetable broths. Sounds like a great idea, right? Well, the company’s website…

It’s already too late to shut the door on GM foods

(NaturalNews) A report from the British Royal Society has been released that urges support for genetically-modified foods by the British public in order to address what it deems the world’s growing demand for food. The report also reveals the disturbing reality about just how far genetically-modified (GM) foods have already penetrated the food supply in England, despite widespread public rejection of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) roughly a decade ago. Over the years, Brits have been led to believe that their diets are GMO-free. Truth be told, nearly two-thirds of the roughly 2.6 million tons of soy that is imported into the United Kingdom each and every year is GM and most people there are entirely unaware of it. Though used primarily for animal feed, GM soy has been making its way into the British food supply for years due to the fact that manufacturers and retailers are not properly tracking the source of their soy, allowing GM soy to make its way into …
